Supergirl, as portrayed in The CW's TV series *Supergirl*, is Kara Zor-El, a Kryptonian refugee who arrived on Earth years after her cousin, Superman. Her escape pod was diverted into the Phantom Zone, causing her to arrive later than intended.

She was sent to Earth to protect her infant cousin, Kal-El (Superman), from Krypton's destruction. Upon arriving on Earth, she was raised by the Danvers family, who taught her to conceal her powers and live a normal life. However, after working for a company called CatCo she embraces her powers and becomes Supergirl to protect National City.

Melissa Benoist portrays Kara/Supergirl in the TV show, which first aired on CBS in 2015 before moving to The CW. While Superman made his first appearance in *Action Comics #1* in 1938, Supergirl's first appearance in The CW universe is in *Supergirl* Season 1, Episode 1.
